90-year-old school requires abatement, remediation and demolition before re-build

Broadview Avenue Public School

Inflector began work on Broadview Public School in late summer 2016 and completed the job by early 2017. Originally constructed in 1927, with seven additions between 1946 through 1976, Broadview Public School required asbestos abatement, mould remediation and general demolition, prior to construction of a new building.

1927 SECTION OF BUILDING

The original building was retained due to its heritage aspects, but all additions were demolished following abatement and remediation of asbestos, mercury in thermostats, light tubes and compact fluorescent lamps. As well, PCBs in lamp ballasts were collected and disposed in accordance with provincial and federal regulations.

As the project building was being demolished, power and water were not available, so tanks of water and a water heater were used to supply the showers and permit wetting of the asbestos-containing building materials prior to removal.  Power was supplied by generators. Inflector also remediated small pockets of contaminated soils around the project site.

For a deeper look into this project, check out this video featuring scenes within the building, during demolition, and aerial images from a drone through the duration of the project.
